Artist Statement

I began painting because of my strong emotional response to modern art. I start my paintings with gestural strokes in very dense black. They become lighter and lighter as I move into and over the black with color and white applied in a way that allows the under work to come through when I need for it to appear, only rarely using black again. I want each motion of paint to balance and move with another until I feel the coming together as a floating through air. What interests me most is what happens when I disrupt and remove anything that I’ve done; a line, a stroke, or a field.

The sandings come from an interest in Japanese sumi and prints, combined with modern abstraction. As in the paintings, I move in and out of the original strokes, this time with sandpaper; often leaving just a fragment of an original stroke. The motion of the strokes interact with the enclosed area by seeming to escape it, return to it, or stay in place.
