Artist Statement

I live and work in Steamboat Springs and at the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, Massachusetts. where I spend two months a year. My work is driven by imaginative invention and based on complex ideas I find compelling but which I don’t yet fully understand. The starting point might be the structure of a cloud, an untranslatable Sanskrit word or a specific event in the world around me. I make paintings, drawings, sculpture and video. Printmaking is a link between the different aspects of my art making process and a way in which to push into new territories.

For the monoprint series, Reason and Romance, I developed a cast of characters of hand drawn forms that describe essential postures of physical matter moving through space. The inspiration for these forms came from looking at growth patterns in nature, scientific charts and geometric diagrams, devotional art and from my own sketchbook drawings and doodles. Working with master printmaker Sue Oehme, this series developed through a complex process of layered vellum and copper plates in multiple oil and water based applications. Each piece involved a slow, and thoughtful process of collaboration. Over time, and many separate individual runs through the press bed, the forms came to inhabit an invented space with its own internal balance, tensions and pathways of movement. The relationship between the forms began to suggest meaning similar to signifiers in written language, while referencing the interacting fragments that one might see beneath the lens of a microscope.

My work is influenced by my travels in Europe, Mexico and India and in residencies at Anderson Ranch Arts Camp, Vermont Studio Center, the New York Studio School and The Mosiac School of Ravenna, Italy. As a resident artist in Calcutta, India, I became involved in arts based projects benefiting street children and established a partnership organization Cards for Calcutta (cardsforcalcutta.org) to continue those efforts. My academic training is in painting, drawing and conceptual art, most recently in the MFA graduate programs at the Maryland Institute College of Art and at Massachusetts College of Art and Design where I recently earned my MFA degree.
