Diane Cionni
Artist Statement
I think of my prints, paintings and drawings as “ideascapes,” individual dreamscapes occurring in the realm of mind and consciousness I approach these compositions representationally as if capturing a moment in history, with the same concern for creating convincing spatial relationships and believability as if painting an iconic mountain or a portrait of a particular recognizable person. I desire to make something totally immaterial become “real.” The solution to problems that arise in the work often lies in the resonance of color as pure language. When the right note is found, it parallels metaphorically to many different aspects of human experience. Because my aim, in general, is to bring disparate elements together in a spirit of lavish inclusivity, it seems natural to work across (and between) mediums, combining many kinds of materials and application processes, in this case, printmaking, digital and photographic processes, stream of consciousness writing, silkscreen, drawing and painting.
Inspirations for my current work include Persian/Indian miniature painting, illuminated manuscripts, the novel Mount Analogue by Renee Daumal and writings by the Spanish artist Joan Miro who used the cultivation of joy in his art practice as an act of social activism during a particularly dark and dehumanizing political era.
